Between the conversation on the Jewitchery Group and my Hebrew class, I got to thinking. What if we’ve gotten the Masculine/Feminine thing wrong all along?
Many languages other than English have Masculine/Feminine forms for words, including Hebrew. This, as we know has led to a belief in much of the world that “God” is male. But if Jews are ardent monotheists even though the word for God in Hebrew is Elohim, a plural word — maybe we’ve not only misunderstood the meaning of God, but also how the Masculine/Feminine forms were intended to work.
Since the masculine form works as both masculine and neutral, and the feminine applys only to women — maybe what’s important is to distinguish if something is distinctly feminine?
What if the original intent was to express that YHVH is neither male nor female. What if the intent was to express that it generally didn’t matter. It mattered when referring to God-Energies or God-Forms like El, Yah, and the Shekinah, but not when referring to Ein Sof, or the total, undefinable embodiment of the Divine?
Just a thought.
