House Rabbit Society

HRS LogoAs I have two beautiful rabbit companions at home, I felt like I should spread the word about these rabbits that desperately need homes. I adopted both of my current, and a previous rabbit, from the House Rabbit Society.

Right now rabbit shelters in North Georgia, Nashville, Maine, and Ohio are in desperate need of help.

For a variety of reasons, mostly situations where people compulsively hoard animals, these groups have been overwhelmed by rabbits needing homes.

I can say from personal experience that rabbits make great housepets. It’s hard for many people to imagine a rabbit just hopping around the house — but they do. They are not like having a dog or a cat — because they are rabbits. Yes, they are litterbox trained. They can be highly affectionate and fun pets to have. One of mine was waiting for me at the bathroom door this morning, when I came out of the shower. He then followed me down the hall and downstairs. I sat down to pet him for a few minutes and got a nice nudge for my efforts!

If you’ve ever considered a rabbit as a pet — go learn more. There are house rabbit societies all over the country that have rabbits for adoption. Get a book, read the info on the website, and see what it would be like to have a bunny.

I’d be happy to share my personal experiences, both good and bad with anyone interested.
