What is Prayer

Adam Cleaveland, a progressive Chrisitan blogger who I’ve been reading lately, posted a question about “What is Prayer.” The initial definitions were very standard Christian definitions. It defined a religionous world-view that is more passive and sits back and just waits for God to do something. As a follower of a more embodied religious world-view, needless to say that doesn’t work for me really well.

At the end of his post, he defined prayer as:

Prayer is any activity that allows humanity to enter into a sacred space; a space where Spirit can speak, Christ can heal and God can transform.

This is a definition that I could use. I’d remove the name Christ, because that’s not part of my theology, but other than that – it’s spot on. The form of prayer I often practice is often challenged by people and they ask me why I use the word magick, if it’s prayer. But this is what it’s all about. It’s a form of prayer that allows me to create a space where things can be transformed by the Divine. The difference is that it’s an intentionally co-creative act, where I am acting as a channel for the Divine energy that infuses everything towards a particular end. I use the word magick to differentiate it from the more passive form of prayer. Magick isn’t just about opening your heart – it’s about showing that you are not only willing to ask for what you want, but also willing to work for it. That’s a big difference in world-view from many people.

I don’t believe it’s enough to pray. I don’t believe it’s enough to open your heart. What are you willing to do? The Divine works through human hands so often. That’s what our sacred scriptures teach us. The story of Exodus shows that the Divine worked through the hands of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam to free the Hebrews from Slavery. It shows that the Divine worked through Bezalel to build the tabernacle. It shows that the Divine worked through all the people to gather supplies.

Belief isn’t enough. Love isn’t enough. Action is required. Magick is prayer in action, but even it isn’t enough. Magick is a beginning, which needs to be followed up by more action.

Sacred Food: Tiramatzah

It’s been brought to my attention that I have written about the great contribution to Pesach cuisine since Caramel Matzah Crunch! I didn’t actually think it was possible for someone to come up with a matzah-based Passover dessert that was better than matzah covered in chocolate and caramel — but they did.

I first saw learned about Tiramatzah on The Jew and the Carrot, a fine blog for anyone interested in food and Judaism! Needless to say, it’s one of my favorites — but I digress.

I’d made strata-style dishes with matzah in years past, but always savory dishes. But, I figured I’d give it a try and made it for a mid-Passover week dinner with my sister and her husband. Well, actually it was Easter dinner. My sister and I both married lapsed Catholics! But, again, I digress.

The tiramatzah was so good that everyone ate more than their fair share, and all agreed it should be the dessert of choice for next year’s Passover Seder! Imagine if you will, a creamy delicious Tiramisu-like dessert with the texture of a napolean. Yes, that does sound good doesn’t it?

Finding Peace with Christianity

Last night at Rosh Chodesh we did something odd for a bunch of Jews. We talked about Jesus. Don’t worry — I’m not converting, but it was a really interesting conversation. I have a weird relationship with Christianity, and since I’m married to a Christian — that’s not really comfortable for me. The problem is mainly that I feel like Christianity is shoved down my throat on a daily basis, and that the majority of the Christians I meet who are religious or have a strong faith — think I’m wrong about, well, everything.

My reaction may not be fare. It’s based on not only my personal encounters, but frankly the group that calls themselves “Jews for Jesus” or “Messianic Jews.” I realize that they are only a small amount of the Christian population. My other experiences come primarily from the media. So far as I can tell faithful Christians, especially evangelicals, pretty much want me to accept Jesus or die trying. My faith, my experiences, my history, my culture, and my encounters with God are worthless meaningless and frankly wrong — according to them. Needless to say, this puts me more than a bit on the offensive. I do have a couple of Christian blogs that I’ve been reading for a while. They are progressive Christians, who I seem to share a lot in common with. Different roads, but the run parallel from time-to-time.

So back to last night’s conversation. One of the things I realized is that I can read Buddhist teachings, Muslim teachings, Hindu teachings, and all manner of Pagan teachings with dispassion and learn from them. I’m not converting to any of those faiths or practices, but I can see them all and appreciate their value to those that are called to walk that path. I can’t do that with the Gospels, and that pisses me off.

Now, here’s where things get a little weird. For some reason this morning, I decided to type in an old college friend’s name into Flickr. This is someone I have seen or spoken to since about 1993. We spoke once after I graduated, but still it’s been around 12 years since I’ve had any contact whatsoever with this guy. Now, to be entirely honest, this guy was my college crush. So imagine my surprise when I actually did find him on Flickr. Then comes the fun part of that experience — following the connections. I clicked on some links and found his blog. Well, my old college crush who I have spoken to in 12 years is a an evangelical Christian seminary. How odd that another person from my small program in college should have had a calling to faith and he’s a blogger. Not just someone who occasionally posts something, but a blogger who shares his story to engage in conversation.

I started reading his blog (no, I’m not sharing the link) and a few that he comments on and found some beautiful voices of Christianity that I could actually have a conversation with. hhhmmmm……. I believe that the Divine works in VERY mysterious ways.

She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her, and happy is every one that hold her fast.
עץ חיים היא למחזיקים בה ותמכיה מאשר
Proverbs 3:18

These subtle connections that tie everything together — that’s God. Seeing and working with those connections — that’s magick.

Light Candles for Them All

While my heart breaks for everyone effected by the massacre at Virginia Tech, I’ll be lighting my candles this Friday for Liviu Librescu, the 76 year-old Holocaust survivor who gave his life to save his students. The unbelievable irony that his death occurred one day after Yom Hashoah shouldn’t be lost on anyone.

This man is why we don’t forget. This sacrifice is what we don’t forget.

Anyone can survive — he lived.

I hope those he saves remember what he did for them and choose to live.

Send them On

My heart goes out to all of those affected by the horrible events that happened today at Virginia Tech, where 33 people were murdered. May they move on to the next life swiftly and find peace.

Send me on with love in your heart
Cry tears of joy for the life I have lived
Praise the Source of Life for connecting our lives
Send me on to the next life

Send me on the way I lived
Embrace what I was, not the space that I leave
Praise the Source of Life for allowing us to love
Send me on to the next life

Send me on without fear
Do not curse or rend your garments
Praise the Source of Life for granting us time
Send me on to the next life

Send me on with praise
Sing songs of joy for all Creation
Praise the Source of Life giving us life
Send me on to the next life

Send me on with libations and toasts
Drink to your health and drink to life
Praise the Source of Life for giving us words to share
Send me on to the next life

Send me on with stones not flowers
Do not add death to death
Praise the Source of Life for all creation
Send me on to the next life

We send you on and prayer for peace for you and those you left behind.
