Happy Chanukah!

I was trying to write something new this year for each night, but I decided that I really liked last years — so I’m reposting it. I mean, come on, if Susan Stamberg can do the Thanksgiving cranberry sauce bit for 20 years, I should be able to reuse a good bit for at list a couple of years.

Each of these is intended as a Kavanah (intention), meditation, or just something to think about, as you light the Chanukah candles each night.

Ohr Somayach :: Chanukah :: The Secret of the Dreidel

Ohr Somayach :: Chanukah :: The Secret of the Dreidel

Who knew? The dreidle is actually an ancient storytelling device!

A children’s game, played in the firelight of a cold winter night, the Chanukah Menorah silently glowing in the window… The dreidel. Its four sides spinning around the still point in the turning circle; spinning so fast that its sides blur into nothingness… The dreidel. So seemingly insignificant - and yet this little dreidel contains the story of the Jewish People; the history of the whole world…

Learn more about the meaning dreidles than you thought ever existed. Heck, I just figured it was a good way to teach us to gamble as children!

Chabad.org Website
Hanukkah - Chanukah | Chabad.org > Holidays

Next in our Hanukkah information blitz, is the Chabad.org site. Chabad is a great source of information about all holidays, and I love the Hanukkah site. From “Menorahs Around the Globe” to a full multimedia section — pretty much anything you want to know is here.

The Chabad do tend to dig deeper into meanings than many other sects, so you can find many mystical correspondences and unusual tidbits that you won’t find with other sources.

Chanukah in Story and Song

I love this album. I’m a huge fan of the Western Wind Ensembles’ Jewish music collections. I also have their Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sabbath albums. All are narrated by Leonard Nimoy, and his voice is perfect for this. If you’ve read his Shekinah book, you know how well suited he ist to do spiritual work like this.

If you want a great spiritual gift for someone this Chanukah — buy this album!

BTW — Amazon doesn’t seem to have any of the Western Wind albums, except the Chanukah and the Passover one (which I’ve not heard) right now — but you can purchase the others on the Western Wind website.

BBC - Religion & Ethics - Hanukkah

BBC - Religion & Ethics - Hanukkah

I’m a huge fan of the BBC “Religion and Ethics” site. It has great information about many of the world relgions, their practices, holidays, beliefs, and such. This even includes Neo-Pagan — which is ignored by most such sites.

I felt that this site was more than worthy of inclusion for my Hanukkah information blitz. Of special note on the site is the audio track from Britain’s Chief Rabbi.
